Site description (2000 baseline)
The IBA encompasses a group of largely uninhabited islands and surrounding shallow waters. The vegetation on the islands includes saltmarshes, heathland and various grassland types, with some cultivation on a few islands. The sea area surrounding the islands is regarded as a scientific reference area as it is almost unaffected by nutrient pollution.
Key biodiversity
The site supports a large colony of Phalacrocorax carbo and high numbers of wintering Somateria mollissima. Recurvirostra avosetta, Sterna sandvicensis, S. paradisaea and S. albifrons, listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive, breed at the site.
