Southern Japan Alps

Site description (2007 baseline):

Site location and context
The vast mountain ranges extend over Yamanashi Prefecture , Nagano Prefecture and Shizuoka Prefecture , ranging north and south about 50 km, east and west about 15 km, and has high peaks over 3,000 m. Its strata mainly consist of Paleozoic strata and Mesozoin formation. There are many kinds of vegetation varying from the subtropical to alpine belt at the center of mountain ranges. At the alpine belts up to near 2,500 m, Abies veitchii and Tsuga diversifolia form forest belts, then at higher than 2,500 m Pinus pumila and alpine grassland extend. The site has less snow and more rain fall in summer than at Northern Japan Alps, so that alpine meadow and dry grasslands are developed.
