Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A coastal site with intertidal mud- and sandflats, shoals, banks, islets and islands, saltmarshes, coastal heathlands and a few cultivated areas. Marine areas surrounding this IBA (and previously included within it, following Grimmett and Jones 1989) are now included in site 119.



Key biodiversity
The site is a very important staging area for Calidris alpina. It also holds several breeding species listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive including Recurvirostra avosetta, Philomachus pugnax, Tringa glareola, Sterna hirundo, S. paradisaea and S. albifrons.



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Access is prohibited to some parts of the IBA during the breeding season.



Protected areas
National Low International High10,000 ha of IBA covered by Ramsar Site (Læsø, 67,840 ha). 10,000 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (South Læsø and adjacent sea, 66,380 ha).
