South-eastern Kittilä mires


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A large complex of adjacent mire conservation areas to the south-east of Kittilä settlement. The area supports aapa mires characteristic of the Peräpohjola zone. Old-growth forests with large numbers of both very old (over 200 years) and dead (both standing and fallen) trees are present.



Key biodiversity
An important area for boreal avifauna.



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The area is a candidate SAC.



Protected areas
National Partial International High1,027 ha of IBA covered by Peatland Reserve (Mustaoja-Nunaravuoma, 1,044 ha). 7,225 ha of IBA covered by Peatland Reserve (Näätävuoma-Sotkavuoma, 7,264 ha). 2,350 ha of IBA covered by Peatland Reserve (Tollovuoma-Vasanvuoma, 2,366 ha). 1,628 ha of IBA covered by Peatland Reserve (Silmäsvuoma, 1,620 ha). 21,035 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Tollonvuoma-Silmäsvuoma-Nunarvuoma).
