Sources of the Bolshaya Karaganka and Syntasty rivers

IBA Justification

The site was identified as important in 2008 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List1 Season Year(s) Size IBA criteria
Demoiselle Crane Anthropoides virgo LC breeding 2002 present A3
Little Bustard Tetrax tetrax NT breeding 2006-2007 200-400 breeding pairs A1, A3
Great Bustard Otis tarda EN breeding 2002 present A3
Eastern Imperial Eagle Aquila heliaca VU breeding 2006-2007 11-15 breeding pairs A1, A3
Red-footed Falcon Falco vespertinus VU breeding 2002-2007 100 breeding pairs A1, A3
Red-footed Falcon Falco vespertinus VU passage 2002 150 individuals A1
Red-footed Falcon Falco vespertinus VU passage 2006-2007 1,000 individuals A1

1. The current IUCN Red List category. The category at the time of the IBA criteria assessment (2008) may differ.

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2008. The most recent assessment (2007) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2007 near favourable high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat -

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Forest good (> 90%) moderate (70-90%) near favourable
Grassland good (> 90%) good (> 90%) favourable
Artificial/Terrestrial good (> 90%) good (> 90%) favourable

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Residential and commercial development happening now some of area/population (10-49%) very rapid to severe deterioration high
Energy production and mining likely in short term (within 4 years) some of area/population (10-49%) very rapid to severe deterioration high
Biological resource use happening now some of area/population (10-49%) very rapid to severe deterioration high
Natural system modifications happening now some of area/population (10-49%) very rapid to severe deterioration high
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now some of area/population (10-49%) slow but significant deterioration medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Protected areas Management plan Other action Result
Little/none of site covered (<10%) No management planning has taken place Substantive conservation measures are being implemented but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity low
