IBA Justification

The site was identified as important in 2008 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List1 Season Year(s) Size IBA criteria
Common Eider Somateria mollissima NT breeding 1996 1,600-2,100 breeding pairs B1i
Steller's Eider Polysticta stelleri VU non-breeding 1994 200-1,000 individuals A1, A4i, B1i
Common Goldeneye Bucephala clangula LC non-breeding 1994 700-1,000 individuals B1i
Mew Gull Larus canus LC breeding 1996 660-800 breeding pairs B2
Arctic Tern Sterna paradisaea LC breeding 2006 5,000-12,500 breeding pairs A4i, B1i

1. The current IUCN Red List category. The category at the time of the IBA criteria assessment (2008) may differ.

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2008. The most recent assessment (2007) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2007 not assessed medium negligible
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
no unset poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of area/population (10-49%) slow but significant deterioration medium
Biological resource use happening now some of area/population (10-49%) slow but significant deterioration medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Protected areas Management plan Other action Result
Some of site covered (10-49%) No management planning has taken place Very little or no conservation action taking place negligible
