IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2008 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Caucasian Snowcock Tetraogallus caucasicus LC resident (1999–2001) 8–10 males A2, A3
Caucasian Grouse Lyrurus mlokosiewiczi NT resident (2007) 150–200 males A1, A2, A3
Corncrake Crex crex LC passage (2007) 1,500–10,000 birds A1
Black Stork Ciconia nigra LC breeding (2007) 4–5 pairs B2
European Roller Coracias garrulus LC passage (2007) 30–50 birds A1
Yellow-billed Chough Pyrrhocorax graculus LC breeding (1982–2006) 30–50 pairs A3
Krueper's Nuthatch Sitta krueperi LC resident (2007) 2,000–3,000 pairs A1, B2
Wallcreeper Tichodroma muraria LC winter (1978–1992) 20–30 birds A3
Semi-collared Flycatcher Ficedula semitorquata LC breeding (2007) 300–500 pairs A1, B2
Alpine Accentor Prunella collaris LC breeding (2003) 20–30 pairs A3

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2008. The most recent assessment (2007) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2007 moderate medium low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
no habitat medium

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Forest good (>90%) moderate (70–90%) moderate
Shrubland good (>90%) good (>90%) good
Grassland good (>90%) good (>90%) good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Residential and commercial development happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation No management planning has taken place Some limited conservation initiatives are in place low
