Sneekermeergebied

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2016 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Barnacle Goose Branta leucopsis LC non-breeding (2011–2015) 43,138–83,930 birds A4i, B1i, C2
Greater White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons LC non-breeding (2011–2015) 37,335–55,660 birds A4i, B1i, C3
Eurasian Golden Plover Pluvialis apricaria LC winter (2011–2015) 3,584 birds B3
Northern Lapwing Vanellus vanellus NT winter (2011–2015) 8,022 birds B2
Black-tailed Godwit Limosa limosa NT non-breeding (2011–2015) 1,453–2,412 birds B1i, C3
Ruff Calidris pugnax LC non-breeding (2011–2015) 968–1,800 birds C6
A4iii Species group - waterbirds n/a non-breeding (2011–2015) 32,699–45,860 birds A4iii, C4

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2016. The most recent assessment (2017) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2017 very poor not assessed medium
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Barnacle Goose Branta leucopsis 43,138 / 60,300 (birds) 72 moderate
Greater White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons 37,335 / 91,800 (birds) 41 poor
Eurasian Golden Plover Pluvialis apricaria 3,974 / 520 (birds) 100 good
Northern Lapwing Vanellus vanellus 12,544 / 3,500 (birds) 100 good
Black-tailed Godwit Limosa limosa 1,453 / 110 (birds) 100 good
Ruff Calidris pugnax 968 / 5,200 (birds) 19 very poor
