Site summary
The hills of the Slanské vrchy area are primarily covered with beech, oak-beech and oak forests. Deforested borders of the area are composed of arable land, as well as meadows and abandoned pastures. The most frequent activities are forestry, agriculture, hunting and stone mining. The area of Slanské vrchy is a nesting site for important populations of birds of prey, mainly Eastern Imperial Eagle and Lesser Spotted Eagle. This area also contains the biggest population of Ural Owl in Slovakia, as well as a significant number of woodpeckers and forest song bird species (Red-breasted Flycatcher, Collared Flycatcher). The main threat is intensive forestry including deforestation. The site is proposed as an SPA.
