Site description (2000 baseline)
A coastal area with shallow fjords, brackish lagoons, reedbeds, freshwater-meadows, marshes, agricultural land and woodland. Marine areas surrounding this IBA (and previously included within it, following Grimmett and Jones 1989) are now included in Smålandsfarvandet (site 118).
Key biodiversity
Of high importance for wintering Aythya fuligula and as a bottleneck site for passing raptors, especially Buteo buteo (15,000 individuals). There are large annual variations in the numbers of migrating raptors due to prevailing winds and observer coverage (min. in 1993 16,647 individuals, max. in 1995 21,833 individuals). Numbers given for diving ducks include marine areas now within site 118. In some years 20,000 ducks occur but numbers have been lower in recent years, probably as a result of mild winters. Circus aeruginosus, Recurvirostra avosetta, Philomachus pugnax, Sterna hirundo, S. paradisaea and S. albifrons, listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive, breed at the site.
