Site description (2000 baseline)
The site encompasses beaches, dunes, moors and extensive saltmarshes, as well as smaller areas of intertidal sand and mudflats.

Key biodiversity
Several species listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive breed at the site, including Recurvirostra avosetta, Sterna sandvicensis, S. hirundo, S. paradisaea and S. albifrons. Data on breeding birds are not available for Skallingen.
