Site description (2002 baseline):
Site location and context
The Sinh Long area is situated within the Na Hang/Ba Be Forest Complex, and is contiguous with the Tat Ke sector of Na Hang proposed nature reserve. The topography of the site is dominated by a mountain ridge.
Non-bird biodiversity: Three species of globally threatened primates were recorded at Sinh Long by Le Tong Trai et al. (2001) on the basis of interviews: Rhesus Macaque Macaca mulatta, Stump-tailed Macaque Macaca arctoides and Francois' Langur Trachypithecus francoisi francoisi.Particoloured Flying Squirrel Hylopetes alboniger was observed at Sinh Long and Asiatic Black Bear Ursus thibetanus was recorded at interview at the site (Le Trong Trai et al., 2001).Local people have reported that Southern Serow Naemorhedus sumatraensis is fairly common in limestone forest and evergreen forest at high elevations in Sinh Long (Le Trong Trai et al., 2001).
The vegetation of the area comprises fragmented limestone forest at high elevations, secondary forest on the lower slopes, and shifting agriculture on the slopes and in valley bottoms.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The major threats to biodiversity at Sinh Long are clearance of forest for agriculture, hunting, over-exploitation of non-timber forest products, timber extraction, and isolation from nearby forest areas.
Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
In 2001, a biodiversity survey was conducted at Sinh Long as part of the Creating Protected Areas for Resource Conservation using Landscape Ecology (PARC) Project at Na Hang proposed nature reserve and Ba Be National Park (Le Trong Trai et al., 2001). The PARC project is being implemented by the Forest Protection Department (FPD) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in association with Scott Wilson Asia-Pacific Ltd, and with financial support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
