Sidi Moussa - Oualidia

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2001 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Marbled Duck Marmaronetta angustirostris NT winter (1999) 1,420 birds A1, A4i
Black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus LC winter (1999) 1,340 birds A4i
Audouin's Gull Larus audouinii VU winter (1999) 670 birds A1, A4i

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2001. The most recent assessment (2001) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2001 good medium low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
no habitat medium

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Marbled Duck Marmaronetta angustirostris 1,420 / 1,420 (birds) 100 good
Himantopus himantopus 1,340 / 1,340 (birds) 100 good
Audouin's Gull Larus audouinii 670 / 670 (birds) 100 good

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Marine Coastal/Supratidal good (>90%) good (>90%) good
Artificial/Aquatic & Marine good (>90%) good (>90%) good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Biological resource use likely in short term (<4 years) some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Pollution likely in long term (>4 years) some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Residential and commercial development likely in short term (<4 years) few individuals/small area (<10%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation No management planning has taken place Very little or no conservation action taking place low
