Site description (1994 baseline):
Site location and context
An area of mangrove on the southern Red Sea shore, c.20 km north-west of the town of Shuqaiq (west of ad-Darb). A shallow bay with large intertidal mudflats, stands of mangrove
Avicennia and offshore seagrass beds. There is a local fishery.
See box for key species. Other breeding species include
Butorides striatus and
Pandion haliaetus, and possibly
Pelecanus rufescens (also winters: max. 35),
Platalea leucorodia,
Acrocephalus stentoreus and
A. baeticatus.
Non-bird biodiversity: Mammals: Dugong dugon (V).
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
There are presently local threats from small-scale cutting of mangrove and grazing by camels, but plans to develop shrimp farms in the future are a critical threat to the mangrove. The area is not proposed for protection in the NCWCD System Plan for Protected Areas.
