Site description (1994 baseline)
Cultivated upland plains (cereals and sugar beet) at c.1,100 m in the vicinity of Hosseynabad village, 5–15 km west of Shirvan. Land ownership is public and private. Livestock grazing occurs.

Key biodiversity
See box for key species. An important staging area for Otis tarda in November-December. Flocks of 64 (1972) and 53 (1974) have been observed by Department of the Environment personnel, and flocks of over 100 are reported by local farmers. A few birds remain into January, by which time the plains are usually under snow. Falco pelegrinoides is an occasional visitor, and Sturnus roseus is a common passage migrant.
