Segara Anakan - Nusa Kambangan


Site description (1999 baseline):

Site location and context
Located around 4 km west of Cilacap. Nusa Kambangan is a coral island with the highest point up to 200 m. Nusa Kambangan is a penal colony which consists of 6 camps.



Key biodiversity

Non-bird biodiversity: Sus verrucosus, Panthera pardus, Trachypithecus auratus, Chelonia mydas (MacKinnon et.al.1982, Whitten et.al.1996).



Habitat and land use
Lowland rainforest and mangrove forest (MacKinnon et.al.1982). Mangorve forest is used for nursery ground. Mangrove forest in the reserve is the largest remaining one in Java & Bali (Vagnaes 1980, Whitten et.al.1996).



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Forest cutting and coral collection (MacKinnon et.al.1982).



Protected areas
This site includes 4 conservation areas:- Wijayakusuma Nature Reserve (1 ha) declared based on GB No.34. Stbl.369 on 4 June 1937.- Karang Bolong Nature Reserve (0.5 ha) declared based on GB No.34. Stbl.369 on 4 June 1937.- Nusa Kambangan Barat Nature Reserve (928 ha) declared based on GB No.34. Stbl.369 on 4 June 1937.- Nusa Kambangan Timur Nature Reserve (277 ha) declared based on GB No.34. Stbl.369 on 4 June 1937.(Anon 1997, Anon 1998).
