Site location and context
Ministry of Forestry principally has agreed to declared this area as a National Park in August 1998, and the logging concession has agreed (and returned the license) to achieve this (see Momberg
et.al. 1998b). Together with Kayan Mentarang National Park, Sebuku Sembakung National Park will cover watershed area and all habitat from sea level to the mountains, with total area of 1.8 million ha.
There is no information about bird in Sebuku Sembakung. Probably White-fronted Falconet
Microhierax latifrons lives on this area. Some important species predicted live in this site such as Bornean Peacock-pheasant
Polyplectron schleiermacheri, Storm's Stork
Ciconia stormi, Wallace's Hawk-eagle
Spizaetus nanus, Sunda Wrinkled Hornbill
Aceros corrugatus.Non-bird biodiversity: Other biodiversity include Nasalis larvatus, Hylobathes muelleri, Pongo pygmeus, Elephas maximus, Bos javanicus and Crocodylus porosus.Sebuku Sembakung area has the biggest population of Nasalis larvatus (Momberg et.al.1998b).
The size of this area almost 450000 ha that covered lowland forest (119000 ha), forest along of river (36000 ha), swamp forest (80000 ha), mangrove and nypah forest (74000 ha) . Remaining areas are tidal land and slope forest (include limestone outcrops).
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Illegal logging. The military (ABRI), proposed to clear the forest for security reason.
Ulu Sembakung Nature Reserve (500000 ha) and Muara Sebuku Nature Reserve (110000 ha) are included in this area.
