IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2010 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Common Shelduck Tadorna tadorna LC winter (1991–2009) 63–6,545 birds A4i
Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus roseus LC winter (1999) 500–3,000 birds A4i
Common Crane Grus grus LC winter (-) 2,000 birds A4i
Pied Avocet Recurvirostra avosetta LC winter (1991–2009) 70–1,828 birds A4i

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2010. The most recent assessment (2009) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2009 very poor not assessed low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Common Shelduck Tadorna tadorna 6,545 / 750 (birds) 100 good
Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus roseus 4,672 / 1,325 (birds) 100 good
Common Crane Grus grus 1 / 900 (birds) 1 very poor

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Little/none of area covered (<10%) No management plan exists, but the management planning process has begun Some limited conservation initiatives are in place low
