Scenic Rim

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2009 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Black-breasted Buttonquail Turnix melanogaster VU resident (1970–2008) 10 pairs A1, A2, A3
Albert's Lyrebird Menura alberti LC resident (1998–2008) frequent A1, A2, A3
Rufous Scrub-bird Atrichornis rufescens EN resident (1970–2008) rare A1, A2, A3
Green Catbird Ailuroedus crassirostris LC resident (1998–2008) common A2, A3
Regent Bowerbird Sericulus chrysocephalus LC resident (1998–2008) frequent A2, A3
Eastern Bristlebird Dasyornis brachypterus VU resident (1970–2008) 10–20 birds A1, A2, A3
Australian Logrunner Orthonyx temminckii LC resident (1998–2008) frequent A3
Paradise Riflebird Lophorina paradisea LC resident (1998–2008) common A2, A3
Pale-yellow Robin Tregellasia capito LC resident (1998–2008) frequent A2

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2009. The most recent assessment (2019) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2019 moderate medium medium
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Forest good (>90%) moderate (70–90%) moderate

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Climate change and severe weather likely in long term (>4 years) most of population/area (50–90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Natural system modifications happening now most of population/area (50–90%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Residential and commercial development happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation A management plan exists, but it is out of date or not comprehensive Some limited conservation initiatives are in place medium
