Saria island and northern Karpathos


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
Rocky islands characterized by steep cliffs and scree with phrygana as the dominant vegetation. The main human activities are livestock-farming and hunting.



Key biodiversity
This is an important location for species associated with Mediterranean scrub and for breeding seabirds. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Larus audouinii (breeding).



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The main threats are from illegal hunting and fires. The area is a candidate SAC.



Protected areas
National Partial International None1,750 ha of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Vananta-Vrochounta-Stioi-Avlona-Tristomo/Olympou, 1,750 ha).
