Sanjiang Nature Reserve


Site description (2009 baseline):

Site location and context
Located along the border of Tongjiang and Fuyuan counties. Sanjiang Nature Reserve is an inland ox-bow lake wetland. The eastern part of this lake is located on the western bank of the Wusuli Jiang river (River Ussuri), and the western part of the lake is on the Yalu Jiang river.

Key biodiversity

Non-bird biodiversity: Thirty-seven species of mammals have been recorded in the area, including 10 that are nationally protected including Panthera tigris altaia, Martes zibellina and Cervus nippon.



Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
Established as a provincial-level nature reserve in 1994, and subsequently upgraded to a national nature reserve. The reserve was designated in 2002 as a ‘Wetland of International Importance’ (or Ramsar site) under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.
