San Andros Pond

Site description (2006 baseline):

Site location and context
This site is located in North Andros at the San Andros Airport. This pond is now within the airport security boundary and can only be visited by special permission at the airport. Overgrown vegetation around the pond prohibits checking the pond for birdlife.

Key biodiversity
The freshwater pond and the ornamental plants at the airport attract a wide variety of birds, while the weedy verges along the runway and nearby cultivated fields attract a different set of birds. Grebes, coots, moorhens, herons and ducks including West Indian Whistling Ducks have been seen here. Black-cowled Orioles, Smooth-billed Anis, Limpkins, seedeaters, hummingbirds and a large variety of migrant warblers can be found at this site.

Habitat and land use
A few small freshwater ponds in the vicinity provide habitat for the waterbirds. The verges, cultivated fields and the shrubland coppice attract land birds. access is restricted within the airport boundary due to increased security measures.

Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Development and expansion to the airport could easily destroy this habitat.
