IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2000 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Lesser White-fronted Goose Anser erythropus VU breeding (1996) present A3
Long-tailed Duck Clangula hyemalis VU breeding (1996) 1–11 pairs A3
Common Scoter Melanitta nigra LC breeding (1996) 1–11 pairs A3
Smew Mergellus albellus LC breeding (1996) 6–10 pairs B2
Greater Scaup Aythya marila LC breeding (1996) 1–11 pairs A3
Bar-tailed Godwit Limosa lapponica NT breeding (1996) 11–50 pairs A3
Temminck's Stint Calidris temminckii LC breeding (1996) 1–11 pairs A3
Red-necked Phalarope Phalaropus lobatus LC breeding (1996) 11–50 pairs A3
Red-throated Pipit Anthus cervinus LC breeding (1996) 1–11 pairs A3
Lapland Longspur Calcarius lapponicus LC breeding (1996) 1–11 pairs A3

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2000. The most recent assessment (2010) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2010 very poor high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population medium

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Lesser White-fronted Goose Anser erythropus 0 / 5 (pairs) 0 very poor
Long-tailed Duck Clangula hyemalis 25 / 25 (pairs) 100 good
Bar-tailed Godwit Limosa lapponica 115 / 115 (pairs) 100 good
Lapland Longspur Calcarius lapponicus 7,500 / 6,000 (pairs) 100 good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now most of population/area (50–90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation A management plan exists, but it is out of date or not comprehensive Very little or no conservation action taking place low
