Site description (2009 baseline):
Site location and context
Located in the southern section of the Da Hinggan Ling mountains. The mountains in the IBA extend from north-east to south-west and average over 1,000 m, with the highest peak, named Wulanbashan, at 1,997 m. The vegetation is complex, with grassland and broadleaf forest.
Non-bird biodiversity: One hundred and forty Naemorhedus goral were discovered here in 1999.
Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
Established as Saihan Ul Nature Reserve in 1998, and upgraded to a national nature reserve in 2000. This IBA was designated in 2001 (under the name ‘Saihan Wula’) as a ‘Biosphere Reserve’ under UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme.
