Site location and context
A large boreal area located east of Pielinen lake and adjacent to the Russian border. Ruunaa lake lies in the heart of the area and divides the site in two: to the east is a conservation and wilderness area, whilst to the west more recreational activities such as boating and fishing take place. There are many lakes within the site and a spectacular network of rivers and streams. Most of the land is covered by stands of dry
Pinus sylvestris heath and numerous small bogs.
An important breeding area for boreal birds including
Tetrao urogallus (100-500 pairs).
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
