Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A diverse complex of aapa mires and boreal forests with numerous lakes and ponds, located south of the lower course of the Kemi river. The forests are typically 150 years old and Pinus-sylvestris-dominated, with scattered very large aspens Populus tremula.



Key biodiversity
An important area for boreal avifauna. Breeding birds include 11 out of the 15 species in Europe that are restricted to the boreal biome (when breeding).



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Part of the area is a candidate SAC.



Protected areas
National Partial International None7,030 ha of IBA covered by Strict Nature Reserve (Runkaus, 7,030 ha). 1,908 ha of IBA covered by Peatland Reserve (Saariaapa, 1,908 ha).
