Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
A large complex of aapa mires and raised bogs on the western side of Oulujärvi lake. The landscape is dominated by wet, low-ridged mires with numerous pools in the centre and drier sedge mires and forested fens towards the edges.
Probably the most important breeding area of
Gavia stellata in the country. Also an important breeding site for many other peatland birds.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
National Partial
International High2,767 ha of IBA covered by Peatland Reserve (Rumala-Kuvaja-Oudonrimmet, 2,767 ha). 4,837 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Rumala-Kuvaja-Oudonrimmet).
