Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
This site comprises Loch Shiel, Claish Moss and a large upland block to the north-west. Habitats present include nutrient-poor lochs, raised mires, upland moorland, and small remnants of ancient semi-natural acidic oak
Quercus forest along some of the loch sites and lower glens.
First identified in 1992, but contains Kentra Moss from 1989 inventory. Descriptive text and bird data refer to the 2000 Inventory.
The wet areas and lochs support breeding waterbirds and wintering wildfowl, while the upland blocks are important for breeding raptors and other species. The site is also nationally important for breeding
Gavia arctica (3 pairs, 1996, 2%).
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Pleasure boats and angling cause disturbance to birds on Loch Shiel.
Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
Claish Moss National Nature Reserve and Loch Shiel are partly covered by management plans, and research is progressing into the fisheries present on the loch.
