River Piedras marshes and Rompido sandbank


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
The site includes a 12-km-long sandbank, productive sandflats and an estuarine area. The main human activities include fisheries and tourism.



Key biodiversity
This is an important area for wintering waders.



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The main threats are from disturbance from tourists and shellfish collectors and deteriorating water-quality as a result of agricultural pollution.



Protected areas
National Partial International None2,530 ha of IBA covered by Natural Landscape (Marismas del Rio Piedras y Flecha del Rompido, 2,530 ha).
