River Klingaälv – Lake Kranke

Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
The area contains shallow eutrophic lakes, meandering streams, reedbeds (Phragmites), riverside meadows (flooded annually), marshland, Alnus forest and Salix thickets. Large parts of the site are used to graze cattle and for haymaking. Human activities also include fishing, bathing and military exercises.

Key biodiversity
The site is important as a stop-over site for passage swans, geese and ducks, and also supports a diversity of breeding waterbirds, as well as wintering Anser fabalis and five species of raptor. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Haliaeetus albicilla (wintering) and Crex crex (breeding and passage).

Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Drainage has impoverished the fauna and flora of some of the meadowland. A reduction in grazing intensity has had an adverse effect on wader numbers.

Protected areas
National Partial International HighIBA covered by two Nature Reserves (totalling 2,321 ha). 3,975 ha of IBA covered by Ramsar Site (Klingavälsån-Krankesjön, 3,975 ha). IBA overlaps with Special Protection Area (2,900 ha).
