River Ebro ox-bow lakes


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A 25-km stretch of the River Ebro downstream from Zaragoza, including a number of abandoned meanders. Some areas of alluvial woodland, ponds and small areas of marsh vegetation remain in an otherwise intensively cultivated area.



Key biodiversity
This is an important site for breeding herons and migrating passerines.



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Major threats include the destruction of riverine forest, afforestation with Populus plantations, sand and gravel extraction, hunting, and industrial and urban pollution.



Protected areas
National Partial International Partial777 ha of IBA covered by Natural Reserve (Galachos de la Alfranca de Pastriz, la Cartuja y El, 777 ha). 777 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Galachos de la Alfranca de Pastriz,la Cartuja y El, 777 ha).
