Site location and context
The site is composed of Enoshima, where people are living, about 14 km off shore of Onagawa Port in Miyagi Prefecture and several uninhabited islets around it. These islets are called Enoshima Archipelago (which includes Futamata Islet, the nearest islet to the mainland, offshore of Hirashima, Enoshima, Ashijima and northern Kasagaijima). Very few environmental changes by human have been made because these islets, except Enoshima, are uninhabited ones. The original natural vegetation has almost been lost in Enoshima, while in other islets natural vegetation has been maintained. Starting from the rocky shore on the coast towards high places, the vegetation varies from the grasslands of Graminae and Reynoutria sachalinensis to the forests of Camellia japonica and Pinus thunbergii. Temperate trees cover high places of the islets.
