Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
A mountainous area in the Cordillera Cantábrica with steep slopes covered by scrub and grasslands, deciduous woodland and limestone cliffs at higher altitudes. The summer pastures are grazed by sheep and cattle. Other activities include game hunting and forestry.
This is an important site for species associated with forests.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The main threats include hydroelectric schemes, the development of the ski infrastructure, deforestation to create new pastures, overgrazing and the pressure from tourism.

International None70,000 ha of IBA covered by Regional Park (Spain) (Picos de Europa, 120,760 ha). 23,000 ha of IBA covered by National Game Reserve (Mampodre, 29,238 ha). 47,000 ha of IBA covered by National Game Reserve (Riaño, 71,214 ha).
