Site location and context
This Marine IBA is identified using seaward extensions around breeding colonies. It originates from the Peru Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and falls within the Pacific, Southeast FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 4815 km2 and is 22 km away from the closet coastline. The depth ranges from 0 to 1157 m, with a mean annual wind speed of 1.89 m/s and mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 15.41 and 19.52 °C.
8 species trigger IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. Seaward extensions around breeding colony; Reserva Nacional de Paracas include key near-colony areas for breeding populations of Inca Tern (NT) , Red-legged Cormorant (NT) , Elegant Tern (NT) , Peruvian Tern (EN) , Guanay Cormorant (NT) , Humboldt Penguin (VU) , Peruvian Pelican (NT) and Peruvian Booby (LC).
