Redbeeds and copses of Aranjuez


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A section of the Tagus river with well conserved riverine forests and several reedbeds (Phragmites).



Key biodiversity
This is an important site for breeding and wintering waterbirds and wetland raptors. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Aythya nyroca (wintering) and Tetrax tetrax (resident).



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The main threats are the logging of riverine forest, industrial and urban development and overgrazing. Management plans exist for both Natural Reserves.



Protected areas
National Low International Partial56 ha of IBA covered by Natural Reserve (Carrizal de Villamejor, 56 ha). 635 ha of IBA covered by Natural Reserve (El Regajal-Mar de Ontígola, 635 ha). 15,520 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Carrizales y Sotos de Aranjuez, 15,520 ha).
