Site location and context
Rabo de Junco Islet is a small islet of 2.4ha, located on the east of Sal island and in the northern edge of Murdeira Bay, a Marine Protected Area in Sal Island, and about 330 meters offshore from Rabo de Junco Mount. It is a flat and semi-arid islet, from volcanic origin, which facilitated the formation of many burrows, now used by the Cabo Verde Shearwater (Calonectris edwardsii), the Cabo Verde Storm-petrel (Hydrobates jabe jabe), the Bulwer's Petrel (Bulweria bulwerii) and the Red-billed tropicbird (Phaethon aethereus). The islet is also breeding ground for the resident Osprey (Pandion haliaetus).
Regular nesting ground for the Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) and presence of endemic terrestrial reptiles such as the genus Tarentola (species to be identified yet) and Chionina.
