Site description (2009 baseline):
Site location and context
Located on the southern slopes of the central Himalayas, in Tingri and Dinggyê counties, to the east of Mount Everest (8,848 m, the highest peak in the world). The IBA has high mountains and deep valleys, and dense forest. The vegetation shows prominent vertical zonation, with broadleaf evergreen forest (1,600-2,500 m), coniferous-broadleaf mixed forest (2,500-3,100 m), alpine coniferous forest (3,100-4,000 m) and alpine scrub (4,000-4,500 m).
Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected animals include Presbytis entellus (a primate endemic to the Himalayas), Ursus arctos, Selenarctos thibetanus, Ailurus fulgens, Moschus chrysogaster and Capricornis sumatraensis.
Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
The IBA is inside Qomolangma Feng National Nature Reserve (3,300,000 ha), which was first established in 1988 and fully established in 1993.
