Site description (2003 baseline):

Site location and context
The people of Larat Island lives on the west, north and east coast. Most of the people work as dry land farmer and fisherman. Main comodities are coconut, coffee, kapok and cashew.



Key biodiversity
Information from this area is very limited, but predicted has restricted-range bird species. Tanimbar Starling Aplonis crassa is the one of the restricted-range bird present in this area, which only recorded in Larat Island and Tanimbar Tengah.

Non-bird biodiversity: Dendrobium phalaenopsis, Chelonia mydas, Dugong dugong, Birgus latro (Monk et.al.1997).



Habitat and land use
The main habitat is semi-evergreen rainforest (Monk et.al.1997)



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Natural habitat conversion for plantation.



Protected areas
4505 ha of this area is declared as Wildlife Sanctuary based on SK Menteri Pertanian No.169/Kpts-II/1995 on 25 March 1995
