Site description (2003 baseline):

Site location and context
Western part of this area is steep mountain covered by forest with rocky clift, while the eastern part is flat. There are two villages on the east coast. Local people very dependents on natural resources, terrestrial or marine (Moelliker & Heij 1995). Most of the people in Boano Island work as farmer, fisherman and working in melaleuca oil distillation.



Key biodiversity
Black-chinned Monarch Monarcha boanensis as Boano endemic has very small population (Moelliker &Heij 1996, BirdLife International 2001). This area is also a nesting ground for Moluccan Scrubfowl Eulipoa wallacei (BirdLife International 2001)

Non-bird biodiversity: Cervus timorensis moluccensis and Hydrosaurus amboinensis (Hitipeuw & Tuhumury 1999 Obs.pri.). Dugong dugon, Chelonia mydas, Eretmochelys imbricata (Monk et.al.1997).



Habitat and land use
Main habitat type is evergreen rainforest (Monk et.al.1997). The eastern part is dominated by coconut tree and Imperata line between Melaleuca kajuputih. Mangrove on the southern part of the area.



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Burn schrub area for cultivation and extention of Melaleuca plantation, cutting trees for local boat & housing construction. There are also collecting marine fauna with explosive.



Protected areas
The southern coastal and marine area of Boano Island have been proposed as a Nature Reserve (4435 ha) by PKA (1994, 1997).
