Puerto de Arica

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2010 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Peruvian Pelican Pelecanus thagus NT resident (2009) 1,000-2,499 birds A1
Franklin's Gull Larus pipixcan LC winter (2009) 30,000 birds A4i
Inca Tern Larosterna inca NT resident (2009) 2,000 birds A1, A4i
Elegant Tern Thalasseus elegans NT winter (2009) 200 birds A1
A4iii Species group - waterbirds n/a winter (2009) 20,000-49,999 birds A4iii

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2010. The most recent assessment (2015) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2015 very poor high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat medium

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Marine Coastal/Supratidal - poor (40–69%) very poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Transportation and service corridors happening now whole of population/area (>90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Climate change and severe weather likely in short term (<4 years) whole of population/area (>90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Little/none of area covered (<10%) No management plan exists, but the management planning process has begun Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity low
