Site description (2000 baseline)
A sea area with shoals, banks and islands. The islands and islets have freshwater and saltmarshes, reedbeds, heathland, grasslands, mature Quercus, Tilia and Carpinus forests, cultivated land and scattered settlements.
Key biodiversity
Recent numbers of visiting birds (notably Aythya fuligula) are lower than in 1983 when the site was designated a Special Protection Area. In harsh winters, Bucephala clangula and Aythya fuligula meet A4i criteria. Several species listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive breed at the site, including Botaurus stellaris, Circus aeruginosus, Recurvirostra avosetta, Philomachus pugnax, Sterna sandvicensis, S. hirundo, S. paradisaea, S. albifrons, Dryocopus martius and Lullula arborea.
