The Poľana area is comprised of one of the most intact volcanoes (kalder) in Europe. Steep slopes are covered with well-preserved forests of almost all types and include many valuable submountain and mountain meadows and pastures. Forestry; hunting and traditional agriculture, including sheep grazing, are the main activities in the area. Poľana is an important nesting site for nesting Lesser Grey Shrike and Woodlark, as well as for other meadow and forest bird species. Main threats include intensive forestry, deforestation and grass-fire. The site is proposed as an SPA.
