Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
A very large and outstanding habitat complex of archipelago, sea bays, river mouths, lagoons and eutrophic lakes at the delta of the Kokemäki river. Large areas of meadow, marsh and deciduous forest on shores considerably increase the diversity of the avifauna. Fishing, boating and hunting are common in some parts of the site.
One of the most important wetlands in the country for breeding and staging waterbirds, including some of the largest breeding populations in Finland of
Podiceps auritus (29 pairs),
Botaurus stellaris,
Aythya ferina,
Circus aeruginosus (16 pairs),
Fulica atra (405 pairs),
Calidris alpina schinzii (25 pairs),
Larus minutus,
Acrocephalus scirpaceus and
Panurus biarmicus (80 pairs). The site is also an important staging area for several species, including nationally important numbers of
Cygnus olor (1,200 individuals),
Branta canadensis (1,500 individuals),
Tadorna tadorna (300 individuals),
Charadrius hiaticula (1,500 individuals),
Limicola falcinellus (300 individuals) and
Calidris temminckii (300 individuals). Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria:
Anser erythropus (max. 8 individuals, passage),
Polysticta stelleri (max. 30 individuals irregularly occur on passage),
Haliaeetus albicilla (4 pairs breeding, 12 birds on passage, 6 birds wintering),
Aquila clanga (max. 2 individuals, passage).
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
There are several birdwatching towers within the area. Part of the site is a candidate SAC.

International Partial141 ha of IBA covered by Protected Area on Private Lands (Herrainpäivä, 16 ha; Enäjärvi, 12 ha; Leveäkari-Riistalanlanti, 13 ha; Halssi, 6 ha; Kokemäensaaret, 117 ha). 8,993 ha of IBA covered by two Special Protection Areas (Kokemäenjoensuisto; Preiviikinlahti).
