Site description (2002 baseline):
Site location and context
The IBA covers the Odra river flood-plain between Mankovice and Ostrava. Habitats include
Quercus and
Ulmus riverine forest, alluvial meadows and oxbow lakes. Tributaries, drainage canals and millraces cut the landscape, and five fish-pond systems support reedbeds (
Phragmites and
Typha).
Quercus/
Carpinus or
Tilia/
Acer forest and arable land occur on the river terraces, with human settlements localized on the periphery. The fish-ponds are semi-intensively managed for fish-farming, and ducks are hunted during autumn.
The site holds 22,000-25,000 waterbirds on a regular basis during spring passage and the breeding season, and supports a large
Larus ridibundus breeding colony. Breeding species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria:
Crex crex (2-12 pairs).
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The establishment of a market zone and the construction of the Dunaj-Odra canal in the vicinity of the IBA represent serious future threats. Hunting is also a problem.
National High
International Partial8,150 ha of IBA covered by Protected Landscape Area (Poodrí Protected Landscape Area, 8,500 ha). Included within the PLA are 1 National Nature Reserve and 2 Nature Reserves (covering 290 ha in total). 1,500 ha of IBA covered by Ramsar Site (Poodrí, 1,500 ha). Poodri SPA was designed (8063 ha).
