Site location and context
Coastal area with calcareous cliff from Burgau to Lagos. The cliffs have an alture of 25 to 100 m and there are several islets near to coastal line in the area of Ponta Piedade and Lagos. These cliffs are cutted for sand beaches in some points like the beaches of Porto de Mós, Dona Ana, Pinhão, Luz and Salema.
A heronry, with Little Egret and Cattle Egret, resides in some islets in the area of Ponta Piedade. The cliffs are important for breeding species like
Falco peregrinus,
Corvus corax,
Corvus monedula and also for an important number of
Apus melba and
Apus pallidus.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The area is protected for the management plan of the coastal margin of Burgau-Vilamoura that regulates the activities in this area. All the littoral is highly disturbed for the elevated number of tourists and also for sporting fishers and urbanistic pressure.
