Site location and context
A wet lowland area with very rich pedunculate oak forest and meadows. Wetland habitats are well developed on carp fishponds Crna Mlaka and Draganic while fishpond Pisarovina is degrading because of suspending of production. River Kupa flows through the southern part of the area. This area is the most important stopover site for Ferruginous Duck in Croatia and an important breeding site for many waterbirds, including Ferruginous Duck.
During migration this area regularly supports more than 20.000 waterbirds. The forests are important nesting sites for White-tailed Eagle, Middle Spotted Woodpecker and Collared Flycatcher. The main threats to birds originate from possible loss of carp fishponds due to abandonment of fish production, changes of water level in wet
forests due to drainage, intensified forest management, drainage, river canalization, excessive or illegal hunting, agricultural intensification and changes in traditional farming.
