Site summary
The area is a well-preserved floodplain of the Ipeľ River with riverbank vegetation, irregularly flooded wet meadows and wetlands. This site is connected to a similar area in Hungary. Orchards and vineyards, as well as thermophilic meadows and localized areas of sand-based vegetation complement the fields, which are cultivated using traditional agricultural techniques. The area is used mainly for agricultural, hunting and fishing purposes. Sheep and cattle grazing is marginal. Poiplie wetlands are important nesting sites wetlands bird species. It is one of the five most important nesting sites for White Stork, Marsh Harrier, Little Bittern, Little Crake, and Spotted Crake in Slovakia. Open agricultural land provides suitable conditions for nesting steppe bird species. The area is also an importantfly-way for migrating water birds. Main threats to the birds include intensive agriculture and wetland loss. The site is proposed as an SPA.
