Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
A small complex of wetland, open mire and riparian vegetation on the lower course of the Pielisjoki river. The area is bordered by an extensive region of ridges with
Pinus sylvestris heath, and by the Pielisjoki river. Ornithologically, the most important part is the outer zone where peatlands and wetlands meet, with an abundance of small pools, muddy patches and beds of reed
Phragmites.
The area holds both wetland and peatland avifauna, including
Circus aeruginosus (1 pair),
Circus cyaneus (1-5 pairs),
Grus grus (3 pairs),
Lymnocryptes minimus (5-10 pairs) and
Larus minutus. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria:
Haliaeetus albicilla (1-5 individuals, passage).
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The site is relatively undisturbed, except in autumn when hunting scares birds from the area. A birdwatching tower on the southern edge offers spectacular views across the area.
