Site description (2000 baseline)
A small complex of wetland, open mire and riparian vegetation on the lower course of the Pielisjoki river. The area is bordered by an extensive region of ridges with Pinus sylvestris heath, and by the Pielisjoki river. Ornithologically, the most important part is the outer zone where peatlands and wetlands meet, with an abundance of small pools, muddy patches and beds of reed Phragmites.
Key biodiversity
The area holds both wetland and peatland avifauna, including Circus aeruginosus (1 pair), Circus cyaneus (1-5 pairs), Grus grus (3 pairs), Lymnocryptes minimus (5-10 pairs) and Larus minutus. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Haliaeetus albicilla (1-5 individuals, passage).
