Pinneberg Elbe lowlands


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
Includes a riverine island (Pagensand) and the edges of the tidal River Elbe, along with riverine forest, pasture, reedbeds (Phragmites) and arable land. Human activities include intensive agriculture and wildfowl hunting.



Key biodiversity
The site holds more than 20,000 passage waterbirds on a regular basis. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Crex crex (11 breeding pairs).



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Threats include water pollution (`Other'), installation of electric power-lines, dredging of the River Elbe and the construction of a major road.



Protected areas
National Partial International None306 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Eschschallen, 306 ha). 2,056 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Haseldorfer Binnenelbe mit Elbvorland, 2,056 ha). 540 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Pagensand, 540 ha).
